Cons

  • A little fiddly to attach to greenhouse

Having a Palram greenhouse at home, I was looking to find ways of increasing my growing options within it, but fitting a shelf. I found this Palram greenhouse shelf kit on Amazon, so gave it a try. I’ve had it fitted for a couple of years now, so have had plenty of time to size it up.

Fitting the Shelf

The kit arrived well wrapped and in pieces, with self-assembly needed to get it ready for fitting. This wasn’t a difficult process, using the special tool to screw the six cross bars to the two end pieces. Once complete, the Palram greenhouse shelf needed to be secured to the vertical struts of the greenhouse. This needed a little manual dexterity to do, being a little fiddly but not impossible. There are screws top and bottom on both sides. These are used to secure the T-shaped attachments into the channel of the vertical struts of the greenhouse.

Plant Support

There is a channel running underneath the shelf bars in which three plastic plant hangers can be affixed. These can help provide support for climbing plants. I have never used these, but you may find them of use. I prefer to use a Palram greenhouse trellising kit, which I have also reviewed.

Maximum Support Weight

This is listed as a heavy duty aluminum shelf kit. It can supposedly support up to 40 kg (90 lb) in weight. I have certainly piled it high with pots full of plants, so it can support a good weight. I doubt I’ve ever had it laden with quite 40 kg though! So I can’t vouch for it’s ability to do so. That is quite a weight for a shelf, after all!

It’s specifically designed to fit all Palram’s greenhouse models, and is claimed to be able to be installed in minutes. It’s a while since I fitted it, but from what I recall it didn’t take me long at all. Perhaps 15 minutes in total.

One bonus is that it can easily be repositioned or removed if you need to. Just simply unscrew the supporting screws. When complete the shelf is 58cm wide x 42cm deep x 20cm high (bracket size). The surface area is quite reasonable, so you can certainly store plant trays with many pots on them. You can purchase multiple shelves to fit all around the greenhouse. I haven’t personally done this, but the photos of the product on Amazon show them fitting snug up to each other.

The greenhouse shelf in position

The package that I was sent included the six cross-bars of the shelf, two end supports, enough screws to attach them all, 3 plastic plant hangers, a device for screwing the nuts in and step-by-step assembly instructions.

Summary

I have been really happy with my Palram greenhouse heavy duty shelf kit. It has supported many heavy pots of plants without showing signs of wear. It should certainly last for many more years, and represents good value for money. I haven’t found a use for the plant hangers, and some people could find it a little fiddly to put together, but overall I recommend this shelf for your Palram greenhouse.
